Sound familiar

This is the page if any of these is happening

  • Charging off a normal power point and adding about 10 kilometres an hour
  • A new car arriving in a fortnight and no charger on the wall
  • A quote from the dealer that says 'from $X' with no mention of your board
  • A board with no spare capacity and a driveway on the far side of the house
  • Solar on the roof and no way to time the charging to use it
What we actually do

The board decides the price, not the charger

Nearly every unpleasant surprise in an EV charger quote comes from the same place: the charger is the easy part, and whether your switchboard and supply can carry another 32 amps is the part nobody looked at.

So we start with a load assessment. What the main supply is rated at, what is already on it, whether the board has a spare way, and whether the run from the board to where the car parks is five metres or thirty-five. Once those four things are known the price is known, and it does not change afterwards.

We install on a dedicated circuit with its own protection, mounted at a height and orientation that suits how you actually park. Where there is solar, we set the charger up so it can be scheduled or load-managed against it, which is the difference between charging on your own power and charging on the grid at peak.

What is included

Load assessment
Supply capacity, existing load and board space checked before you commit to anything. Written up, so a second opinion is easy.
Charger supply
7kW single-phase or 22kW three-phase units from manufacturers with an Australian support presence, or install-only if you have already bought one.
Dedicated circuit
New cable from the board with its own RCBO, sized for continuous load rather than the minimum that passes.
Mounting and cable management
Positioned for how you park, with the lead reaching the port without lying across the driveway.
Commissioning and handover
App set up, charging schedule configured, solar or load management enabled, and you watch it charge the car before we leave.
Certification
Tested and certified, with the paperwork you need for any rebate that applies at the time.
What it costs

What an EV charger install costs

Supply and install as one fixed price, or install-only if you have bought the unit yourself. The variable is always the cable run and the board.

7kW charger, supplied and installed
$1,650 – $2,400Board within about 10 metres of the parking spot, spare way available.
Install only, your own unit
$850 – $1,450Same circuit work and certification, without the hardware.
Long cable run, over 20 metres
+$350 – $900Larger cable to hold the voltage drop, plus conduit or trenching where it crosses open ground.
Board upgrade where required
+$1,450 – $3,200Only if the assessment shows it. You find this out before you order a charger, not after.

Three-phase properties can usually take a 22kW unit, which roughly triples the charge rate. We will tell you whether yours is worth it for the driving you actually do.

While you wait

Worth knowing beforehand

  1. 01Park the car where you normally park it and take a photo showing which side the charge port is on. It decides where the unit goes.
  2. 02Check whether your car takes single-phase or three-phase AC. Some cars cannot use a 22kW unit at all, and there is no point paying for one.
  3. 03Have your electricity plan handy if you want the charging scheduled to an off-peak window.
  4. 04If you have solar and a compatible inverter, tell us the brand — it decides whether excess-solar charging is available to you.

Questions

What people ask about ev chargers

Can I just charge from a normal power point?

You can, and it adds roughly ten kilometres of range an hour. A 7kW wall charger adds about forty. If you drive more than a short commute, a normal point stops being practical fairly quickly — and it was never designed to run at full load for eight hours a night.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?

Sometimes, and the assessment tells you before you spend money on a charger. Homes with a modern board and a spare way usually do not. Older boards with ceramic fuses almost always do, because there is nowhere compliant to land the new circuit.

How long does the install take?

A straightforward install is half a day. A long cable run or a board upgrade on the same visit makes it a full day. We book the whole day either way rather than leaving you waiting.

Will it work with my solar?

With most modern inverters, yes. Depending on the charger and the inverter you can either schedule charging to your solar window or have the charger follow the export in real time. We set that up at commissioning and show you how to change it.
